“The theme for this year’s event is ‘Southern Art Paired with Southern Food,’” says Fox (President of CFADA). “Each year, we encourage our participating restaurants to use local, seasonal products to prepare their tastings. In addition, the galleries will feature southern art or artists who will be present at the event.”

The event is presented as part of the Charleston Fine Art Dealers’ Association’s Studio Series, benefiting visual arts programs at the Gibbes Museum of Art, Redux and the College of Charleston School of the Arts. Cost is $45 per person. Tickets can be purchased at www.cfada.com.

Helena Fox Fine Art LLC is pleased to announce the opening of its upcoming exhibition: A Southern Edge: Recent Works by Julyan Davis.  This exhibition explores the artist’s passion for southern landscape and architecture.  His ability to capture the fragile balance between the historical past and urban sprawl of the present has come to represent our changing South.

Julyan Davis is English born, and moved to the South over 20 years ago, captivated by the ever-changing southern landscape he now calls home. He received his art training at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. In 1988, having completed his B.A. in painting and printmaking, he traveled to the South on a painting trip that was also inspired by an interest in the history of Demopolis, Alabama and its settling by Bonapartist exiles. After years of traditional realism his work has evolved to incorporate aspects of modernism, resulting in paintings that combine traditional techniques such as glazing with an emphasis on the abstract qualities of his subject. His work is in many private, public and corporate collections including the Gibbes Museum in Charleston, the Greenville County Museum of Art, and the Morris Museum of Art.

A Native Son: Paintings by West Fraser considers the landscapes, marine views, and city scenes for which Fraser is best known, as well as travel paintings created around the world and figure-based compositions depicting family, friends, and the artist himself. Consisting of approximately 55 works, the exhibition also demonstrates the evolution of Fraser’s technique, beginning with his large-scale watercolors of the 1980s, which were painted from photographs in the artist’s studio. In the 1990s, his desire to begin painting directly from nature forced him to seek out a more flexible and adaptable medium, resulting in his switch from watercolor to oil. Today, Fraser continues to work in oil, and alternates between plein air painting and studio work (sometimes combining the two). Fraser’s paintings have been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows at museums and galleries throughout the country, and his work is held in the permanent collection of Telfair Museums, Morris Museum of Art, Gibbes Museum of Art, Greenville County Museum of Art, California’s Laguna Art Museum, and many prominent private and corporate collections.

Cathy Solomons, interim director of Telfair Museums, stated, “It is with special pleasure that Telfair Museums presents this exhibition. Although West Fraser has garnered national recognition and numerous awards, this exhibition is his first solo museum show in Savannah, the city of his birth.” Courtney McNeil, curator of art at Telfair Museums, stated, “West Fraser has spent nearly thirty years methodically chronicling lives and landscapes in the South. Because his stylistic inspiration is largely drawn from the work of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American impressionists such as John Henry Twachtman, Childe Hassam, and Edward Redfield, all of whom are represented in the Telfair’s permanent collection, it is particularly appropriate for the Telfair to be presenting this exhibition.”

“I give to a finder of a painting hanging in a tree, it though happens to have strings attached, literally. I ask you, the recipient, to make a donation to a favorite charity, perhaps your local High school art program, artist organization, local museum or a talented artist in need. I hope that with my gift found, the discoverer will give as well, and perhaps encourage others to make random acts of giving and kindness.  As a catalyst to perpetuate gift giving in the community I hope that my Painting in a Tree project can make a difference.”

Each November more than 20 nationally renowned artists, whose work are showcased exclusively in the CFADA member galleries in historic downtown Charleston come together for a weekend long event.  Proceeds for this event help support Charleston County Highschool Arts through the purchase of a ticket as well as auction sales.  First event begins Friday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. with West Fraser’s solo Exhibition “A Portrait of Place” at Helena Fox Fine Art.  The following morning on Saturday from 9-12 a.m., artists, including West Fraser and Julyan Davis, will be painting in Washington Park while giving plein air demonstrations.  Those paintings will then be auctioned off at Ella Richardson Fine Art on 58 Broad from 6:30-8:30 pm.
