Opening Reception: Thursday March 1, 2011

Helena Fox Fine Art LLC is pleased to announce the opening of its upcoming exhibition: A Southern Edge: Recent Works by Julyan Davis.  This exhibition explores the artist’s passion for southern landscape and architecture.  His ability to capture the fragile balance between the historical past and urban sprawl of the present has come to represent our changing South.

Julyan Davis is English born, and moved to the South over 20 years ago, captivated by the ever-changing southern landscape he now calls home. He received his art training at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. In 1988, having completed his B.A. in painting and printmaking, he traveled to the South on a painting trip that was also inspired by an interest in the history of Demopolis, Alabama and its settling by Bonapartist exiles. After years of traditional realism his work has evolved to incorporate aspects of modernism, resulting in paintings that combine traditional techniques such as glazing with an emphasis on the abstract qualities of his subject. His work is in many private, public and corporate collections including the Gibbes Museum in Charleston, the Greenville County Museum of Art, and the Morris Museum of Art.

Here is how West Fraser feels about his project:

“I give to a finder of a painting hanging in a tree, it though happens to have strings attached, literally. I ask you, the recipient, to make a donation to a favorite charity, perhaps your local High school art program, artist organization, local museum or a talented artist in need. I hope that with my gift found, the discoverer will give as well, and perhaps encourage others to make random acts of giving and kindness.  As a catalyst to perpetuate gift giving in the community I hope that my Painting in a Tree project can make a difference.”

Each November more than 20 nationally renowned artists, whose work are showcased exclusively in the CFADA member galleries in historic downtown Charleston come together for a weekend long event.  Proceeds for this event help support Charleston County Highschool Arts through the purchase of a ticket as well as auction sales.  First event begins Friday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. with West Fraser’s solo Exhibition “A Portrait of Place” at Helena Fox Fine Art.  The following morning on Saturday from 9-12 a.m., artists, including West Fraser and Julyan Davis, will be painting in Washington Park while giving plein air demonstrations.  Those paintings will then be auctioned off at Ella Richardson Fine Art on 58 Broad from 6:30-8:30 pm.

Distinguished Southern artist West Fraser has the soul of the South in his blood. A love of the land is apparent in his paintings that evoke a true and honest sense of place.  A master of the nuances of light and nature, his work is comparable to the finest of American and European Impressionist of the past. Nationally recognized, Fraser creates a feeling of timelessness in his work that draws the viewers into his contemporary experience.

This exhibition grew out of West Fraser’s passion for his landscape, the region his family has claimed as home since colonial times. The South Carolina and Georgia Lowcountry is a land of beauty, serenity, history and diversity, which keeps her inhabitants spellbound and seduces all who come to call it home. Since earliest memories, Fraser has explored her hidden places, both by water and by land. He is one with her flora and fauna. A keen observer might find him at work, knee deep in marsh mud with white ibises feeding all around him, running under his easel without a care. A “native son of the South” West Fraser captures her soul in his paintings that make A Portrait of Place.

An annual exhibit that explores the artists’ homage to the spirit of America. The idea germinated from suggestions by collectors for ” things American”. In the ever changing, hectic and globally influenced world – a view, a feeling, a memory of something real is becoming ever so important. This group exhibition, speaks of America today. We are honored to host the fine art of 12 nationally recognized artists; Sarah Amos, John Cosby, Julyan Davis, William R. wins the prestigious Edgar Payne Gold Medal Award for Best Landscape for 2011 at the California Art Club’s 100th Annual Gold Medal Awards.  The Club’s Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibitions is considered to be one of the country’s premier exhibitions of contemporary-traditional fine art, held this year at the Pasadena Museum of California Art.West Fraser, Before the World Was Made, Oil on linen, 24″ x 30″

(Charleston, SC) ¬ Helena Fox Fine Art at 12 Queen Street in historic downtown Charleston presents an evening of Southern culinary delights from acclaimed Chef Jeremiah Bacon of Carolina’s Restaurant, paired with the glamorous jewels of renowned goldsmith Sarah Amos.

Carolina’s Restaurant, a landmark in Charleston’s rich culinary history, offers a contemporary approach to Lowcountry cuisine.  Chef Jeremiah Bacon utilizes local ingredients grown on Kensington Plantation in unique creations and Lowcountry classics. The New York Times calls Carolina’s “one of the most elegant restaurants on the East coast…among the best.”

Sarah Amos, originally from South Wales, creates exquisite contemporary jewelry using centuries-old techniques of ancient goldsmithing.  She has been featured in numerous national and international publications including Charleston Magazine, Charleston Weddings and most notably Art & Antiques.  Her one-of-a-kind pieces include hand-crafted bracelets, pendants, rings, earrings, and necklaces.  Amos selects the finest stones from rose-cut diamonds, beautiful sapphires to Peruvian opals. Her jewelry is crafted using original, ancient Greek and Roman coins, which adds to its mythical heritage.  Amos explains her artistic philosophy: “When creating a piece of jewelry; I intend for it to be unique, functional and timeless.”
